PYLLON ENDEAVOUR
A Winter Challenge - 192 miles in 24 hours
We are aiming to run on the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William and back in just 24 hours, to raise awareness of the benefits of running and community to mental health and well-being.
The Challenge
Ultra running is a difficult sport. And running 100-miles is said to be like living the many ups and downs of life in just one day. It has become our way of managing the stresses of everyday life and we know that running has the potential to help many others.
We will attempt to run the 96-mile WHW south to north and back, as a continuous relay. Each runner will complete at least 3 legs and their total running distance will be of ultra distance (more than 26.2 miles). We have 8 x runners and 1 x GPS tracker that will be passed over at each changeover point. A few sections will have 2 x runners for safety reasons.
When and Where?
START: Pyllon Endeavour will start at 16:00 on Friday 16th November from Milngavie Railway Station carpark - close to the start of the 96-mile West Highland Way. If you can make it to the start to wish us well we would love to see you there.
FINISH: We will also finish at the same place anytime between 15:00 and 17:00 on Saturday 17th November and we’d love to have support there to cheer us in. It might be emotional!
We have a small venue booked for everyone to get together after the event from 15:00 onwards if you want to join us and talk to the team in a very relaxed environment.
Who is running?
We have 8 incredible ultra runners taking part, including multiple podiums and wins at races on the very course we’ll be running. If you want to follow you favourite runner either out on the course or on the live tracker, here’s the plan of who’ll be running each section and an idea of the time of day.
How you can help
We have some very clear aims for the event and we need your help if we are going to succeed! Here’s how you can get involved:
FOLLOW: We will have a live GPS tracker when we start and it will be with us throughout the challenge. Endeavour live tracking. You will also be able to follow our live updates on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook on the Pyllon accounts. Please follow for updates.
SUPPORT: If you are in the area, we’d love to see you out on the course. Here, you can find a list of each leg your favourite athlete will be running. If you’re out on the West Highland Way and capturing images of the team during the event please use #PyllonEndeavour to tag your posts. Please be mindful of local residents if you do come out (considerate parking and lower the noise levels at night).
SHARE: We are trying to reach as many people as possible, and we’d love to get #PyllonEndeavour trending, so please help us out by sharing, retweeting, following and commenting!
DONATE: We are raising funds for the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH). If you can spare any money please show your support by making a donation.
TALK: We are trying to encourage people to open up and talk about their feelings. So please talk more, and be prepared to listen to those that need to be heard. Remember people often say that they are ok as an automatic reaction - they may not be!
The West Highland Way
It is 96 miles long and runs from Milngavie (north of Glasgow) to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, The trail, which opened in 1980, was Scotland's first officially designated Long Distance Route, and there's been a race along it since 1991. We will run as a relay team on this iconic route to Fort William and back again. That’s 192 miles. We start at 4pm. The run will be in the dark for 75% of it and we will double up on more remote and technical sections to ensure runner safety.
We will be attempting to complete the run in under 24 hours. That’s 192 miles, close to 30,000 feet of ascent, mostly in the dark, across some of the remotest parts of Scotland and from the lowlands to the highlands and back again. Each runner will complete a distance greater than a marathon in the endeavour.
