Exposure by Pyllon is a unique race concept that will provide you all the motivation you need to train hard over the next few months. Exposure has different race options to suit everyone and is not just for Pyllon athletes. It’s an event with a difference, and you will need to be ready to embrace uncertainty:

  1. It’s a race - there will be winners, and for many, just finishing the race will be a huge accomplishment

  2. The race will start and finish at a set time, just like a normal event, so you’ll be going up against others in a ‘live’ environment

  3. As the name suggests, this is an event that you’ll have to surrender to. It won’t be easy, and for the racer, there will be the uncertainty and challenge of not knowing exactly what distance you’ll run and how to survive the full exposure time

What is it?

Exposure by Pyllon is a virtual ultra running event starting on the 24th April. You can expose yourself to one of three race options - 6 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours.

Once selected, in order to complete the race you’ll have to commit to taking part for the full race period (6, 12, or 24 hours). However, you won’t know exactly what distance you have to run. Each hour of the event, we will reveal how many miles you will have to cover that hour. It’s then up to you to choose how fast you want to run - run hard and gain some rest time before the next hourly exposure? Pace it more carefully knowing that you’ll have to survive another 5, 10, or 20 hours?

Already excited? Or scared that you might feel too exposed? Well, here’s a guide to the likely distances you’ll have to be able to endure if you want to earn your finish:

• 6-hour race could be at least 50K

• 12-hour race could be at least 50 miles

• 24-hour race could be at least 100 miles

Some people will want to race - if you do, the challenge will be to complete each Exposure, submit your time and see if you can make it onto the leaderboard. The winner of each event will be the athlete with the fastest overall completion time across all Exposures. Results will be uploaded to the leader board after each hour. It may take until the half hour for these to be updated - but you’ll have a good idea how many people remain and what the leading times are.

For most, the challenge of completion will be monumental enough. You’ll have to think about your rest and recovery time - about staying positive to head back out there and run. Will it be just 2 miles? Or 6 miles this time? We’ll determine the exposure level!

Beyond the results / leaderboard this event will be about having fun. The vulnerability of not knowing what distance you’ll have to cover will be a journey of discovery. We’ll all be in it together and we’re sure to play some games with you along the way. We expect that you might need some virtual support from friends and family, and we want you to share your own personal journey along the way - from the highs of finishing another hour, to the lows of finding out you’ll have to step up the pace for the next Exposure. You can tag us on facebook, twitter or instagram using the hashtag #PyllonExposure

This is a difficult time for us all, so we’ll need everyone to make sure they are adhering to government guidelines at all times. Every country / region has different rules so you’ll have to stay up-to-date with local and national guidelines. if you are in doubt at any point please contact us via email.

Who can enter?

This is an event for all. No matter where you live, where you come from, your background or experience level. The 6-hour version could be a great kick-off event for anyone looking to run beyond marathon distance for the first time. The 12 and 24 hour events are for experienced ultra runners and could provide fantastic focus races for the first half of the year - particularly if you’re looking to race a non-virtual 50 mile, 100K or 100 mile event in summertime or beyond. The start times will be morning UK time (08:00 GMT), so bear that in mind if you’re thinking of joining us from a different time-zone. We’d love to have people all over the world join us for this unique event.

What will you get if you take part?

  • Personal Bib Number - downloadable before race day. You don’t have to wear it, but the kids might want to decorate it!

  • Messages every hour of the event revealing good news or bad news! These will go out as SMS and will also be available online

  • Live results / leaderboard throughout the event

  • There will be a small (and cool) finishers gift for everyone who completes the event. We don’t want to create cheap medals or stuff just for the sake of it. So it will be something worthwhile to mark your finish. If you prefer, you can opt-out and we will make a charity donation instead on your behalf (which we will publish online after the event)

  • Access to two free online coaching seminars with Pyllon Coaches covering training and race planning advice

  • 10% entry discount for Pyllon coached athletes

  • For people not already coached by Pyllon, a special discounted monthly Pyllon coaching offer to get you to the race in shape before the event

  • There will be prizes for the winner of each category, both female and male

  • We will donate at least 5% of profits to a UK charity of our choosing. We will publish details after the event

How Will I Receive My Exposure Distances?

Untitled_Artwork 84.jpg

We will communicate these to you via SMS and all other race communications by email. So it’ll be important that we have these contact details. If you do not have access to a phone with SMS please let us know and we’ll talk to you about other messaging options.

In order to update your results and continue in the race, your time and distance must be uploaded as soon as you finish each Exposure. You should do this straight away, to ensure you can stay in the race. If we do not receive it within 30 mins past the end of each exposure then your race will be over! So, for example, the first Exposure will start at 08:00 and close at 09:00. You’ll have up to 09:30 to upload your first entry. But remember, your completed running distance itself will have to have been done between 8am and 9am if you want to stay in the race. Maybe someone at home can help you do your upload whilst you recover before heading back out again? :)

You submit your results by using the entry page - there is also a link above. We’ll keep the leaderboard up to date, although it may only show full updates on the half hour after each completed Exposure.

You can choose where you want to run - be it road, trail, or treadmill. Doesn’t have to be anything exotic and if speed is your passion, then something flat or near to home (to rest in-between) is the sensible approach. You can always mix it up too - maybe running the shorter Exposures on trail and the tougher longer ones on path or road. If you are going to be competing in the top 10 we may ask you to upload your GPX files or links to training platforms as proof of your run distances and times. This is an honour based race. A prize or finishers gift means very little if you haven’t stuck by the rules. The rules are there to make this as close to a normal race as we can and we fully expect that as committed ultra runners the code of honour will always prevail. Let’s be cool, people.

So let the journey begin for us all. Let’s race!
